Data Use Is Changing
The way data is created, accessed and stored is changing.
In the past 80% of all corporate data was available within the perimeter of the corporate network and was stored centrally. Now 80% of corporate data comes from outside the network perimeter and is stored at the endpoint on PCs and laptops.
Data has never been more valuable to share or more vulnerable to attack.
Cybercrime is changing.
In the past virus writers produced malware simply to vandalise web sites or for notoriety. Then they moved on to stealing credit card information or bank details. Now cyber criminals are high tech, highly organised, very well funded and focussed more and more on sensitive corporate data which is sold on for huge profits.
Protection is changing.
Until recently it was still possible to deploy anti-virus or anti malware solutions which could rely on periodic updates of virus signatures to protect the user. A recent anti-virus industry report stated that AV vendors were identifying over 1000 new malware threats per hour. Even daily updates are not enough. The R&D spend by cybercriminals exceeds the R&D spend of all the antivirus companies worldwide.
